What kind of fiber do you recommend hand spinning yarn?

Posted on September 26th, 2009 by admin

I am a beginner at hand spinning and would like to start spinning my own yarn. I will be using a drop spindle for this, btw. If anyone knows what the best type of fiber to use for beginning to spin, please let me know.

Wool is the only thing that works.

You need to call around and get wool rovings. They come already dyed and carded. Ready for spinning.

Can anybody suggest websites with solid information about textiles in general?

Posted on September 24th, 2009 by admin

Specifically about the four main processes like: yarn spinning (cotton and synthetics), Woven and knitted fabrics weaving process, dyeing and finishing.

Help Please

Here are some electronic and handi-book options for textile
information. I think these work better than paper copies
(which really don’t exist) and in the long run, you learn more and
other people can use them. They are cheap compared to books.

You will not find websites that give the detail you probably need, but the ones given will get you started.

can broken sewing needles embedded in your foot cause problems?

Posted on September 24th, 2009 by admin

5 days ago i went to stand up in the lounge room at home when i felt a sharp pain surge through the bottom of my foot near my toes. i looked down and found 1/4 of a sewing needle on the floor and severe pain with the other 3/4 deep in my left foot. i went to the hospital but they wouldn’t touch it as they said it can cause more damage if they remove it. but i was told today the needle wont come out alone and it can rust up and make me very ill…. what should i do???

Sue the hospital that said they would not remove it. Leaving any type of metal in the body (aside from surgical pins etc.) could prove to be very dangerous. This could lead to major infection, and needs to be re-evaluated immediately. Go to a doctor that knows what they are talking about. Most sewing needles are not sterile, and not made from stainless steel. Your friend is right. It can rust up and cause big problems for you.

How much is a leather case full of about 100 different sized knitting needles worth?

Posted on September 24th, 2009 by admin

I have a red leather case, dull of about 100 pairs of different sized knitting needles that are all in awesome condition. How much would this be worth?
They’re aluminum

Unfortunately they are not really worth much. You would have to find someone specifically interested in buying, which is very hard to do without investing money to list them. Then there is no guarantee they will sell.

For example on ebay right now there is a set of 102 vintage knitting needles selling for $9.50. Not exactly high finance!

If you know the brands and sizes of each pair you could try listing them separately, but I doubt it is really worth your effort.

Maybe you should donate them to a nursing home or day rehabilitation center nearby.

Different ways to finish off a yarn project of knitting/crocheting?

Posted on September 22nd, 2009 by admin

I’m looking for different ways to finish off a yarn project. Usually I just cut the yarn, knot it one more time, then weave it through. There has to be other ways out there. Last year I discovered the "russian join" for changing colors in between projects without having to knot the yarns – and it changed my life :) also made my projects look 1000 times better http://www.knittinganyway.com/freethings/russianjoin.htm Looking for some other magic technique for finishing off a yarn project of knitting/crocheting?

I guess you are talking about yarn and not thread. Here is a site for you to look at and use it to put edgings around the article you have finished. What you should do when you have finished the article is to cit the thread and use your hook or needle and pull the thread through the last stitch on your nedle. then use your crochet needle to weave it through several stitches in one directiona dn then reverse the weaving. However if you are going to make an edging don’t do that unless you are going to use a different color of yarn. As far as the site is concerned just click on the differnt names of the edgings to see what you may like.

What does it mean if you find sewing pins stuck in your door frame?

Posted on September 22nd, 2009 by admin

Lately me and my husband have been finding sewing needles stuck to the top right hand corner of a couple of door frames around our house. The funny thing is we don’t even own those kind of needles. Then, yesterday his friend who we never told this too, comes out and says he is finding these pins also in his door frames and can’t explain it. Is this some kind of voodoo stuff or what? Regardless, it kind of has us all in bunches about it. If anyone knows what this means or even has an idea to what it means, please let me know.

Dear Lissy,
Sorry to hear about your situation. sad to hear about it. Well to be truly honest, I have never experienced it before but from what my grandparents taught me about the dark arts and ways to counter it, your situation is based upon an old vodoo spell that is used to cut off all luck from the household and to harm those in it. The sewing needle is always used as an instrument of the dark arts for murder or bringing harm.

Hope I did not scared you or anything. There is a way to counter the curse. go around your house and find all of the needles that had been placed. Round them up in a glass jam bottle. you can either threw it into the sea or bury it (not in your backyard) but somewhere far.The bottle will seal all of the evil in it.

If you have doubts just cleanse the house with Sage.

I do not expect you do do all of this. This is just my advise to you.
May God protect from you from all evil eyes.

Is there a way to make regular red heart super saver yarn soft like baby yarn?

Posted on September 22nd, 2009 by admin

Baby yarn is more expensive for less yarn and I already have alot of the red heart super save kind but I want to make a baby outfit. I want it to be soft but if I can get away with it I dont want to have to buy a bunch of baby yarn.
The yarn i have is red heart supersaver that is 100% acrylic.

I use the regular red heart supersaver and have found that after a washing it softens up a bit. I have never put it into the dryer tho.
maybe try using hair conditioner on it once you’ve washed it.

Good Luck

Any good sites to find free knitting patterns?

Posted on September 22nd, 2009 by admin

I just got back into knitting, and I love a good, interesting pattern. Any suggestions on places to find them.

There are lots and lots. knitty.com has really nice patterns. You might do a web search for vintage patterns. I found some interesting and unique patterns searching for knittied lingerie patterns. Many of the yarn makers have free patterns, check out patons, and berocco for more sophisticated patterns.
some knitting bloggers have their own patterns, and for socks especially, you would be amazed at the variety.
Welcome back!
