How can I remove odor’s from a wool hand knit item?

Posted on December 10th, 2009 by admin

I am a knitter and started smoking again. To keep the smoke smell out of my yarn I keep most of it in zip lock bags in the refrigerator or freezer. Now the yarn has the smell of refrigerator or freezer. I know I can wash the washable yarn but what can I do with the wool yarn?

put it in the dryer on low heat with a dryer sheet

What is the best beginners knitting book?

Posted on December 10th, 2009 by admin

I need to purchase a book that will help me begin knitting today. I want this book to include the supplies i will need to begin knitting. Also, i would like it to include all the steps to learn the basic stitches.

By the way, I want to start off knitting a scarf and eventually knit hats and gloves and all that.

Thank you!

I like Stitch and Bitch by Stephanie Pearl Mcphee

You can also go on Youtube for videos teaching you how to knit. The two basic stitches are called a Knit and a Purl. These are the only two you need to learn before making a scarf that alternates between Garter Stitch, Stockinette Stitch, Seed Stitch, and many others.

Here is a list of things you will need for the very beginning:
yarn … duh :) Make it a worsted weight, non-fluffy type of yarn. Caron Simply Soft and Red Heart are two brands that are good to start on.
Pair of knitting needles – 10 is a good size to start with (I like bamboo needles just because I think they feel better)
crochet hook – for picking up dropped stitches
Scissors

Here are some additional things you might want eventually:
stitch holders – these look like giant safety pins
cable needle – a small curved needle for making cables
markers – small rings used to mark stitches
counter – used to count the rows
double pointed needles – these are straight and have a point on each end and are used for making the tops of hats knitted in the round, among other things
circular needles – two short needles attached by a plastic cable, these are used to make a blanket or something else that requires a LOT of stitches that wouldn’t fit on a regular needle or to knit in the round (make a tube)

i need to get rid of alot of yarn, but i do not want to sell it, or give it away! what can i do?

Posted on December 8th, 2009 by admin

i use alot of yarn, most of it is acrylic. but i knit, weave, and crochet. but it does not seem to be going anywhere! i feel like the woman who used the small amount of oil and make lots of bread with it in the bible. i keep knitting and crocheting and weaving but i still have alot of yarn!!!!

HELP!!!!! what else can i do????

Make dolls out of yarn loops they take up a lot of yarn!! It’s the kind where you wrap a whole bunch of yarn around like a cardboard or something and then you tie more yarn around the loops to create a belt and arms and legs. Did you already try visiting the manufacturers’ websites they usually have project ideas.

what does K2 Rows mean? new to knitting!!?

Posted on December 5th, 2009 by admin

Hey

im knew to knitting and ive just brought a popcorn kit i have knitted before but never followed a pattern… when i say knit i mean i can cast on, knit a garter stitch and cast off! very simple scarf! lol

my pattern says..

first piece
cast on 8sts
k2 rows
3rd row inc 1st at beg (9)
4th row inc 1st at beg (10)
k2 rows
break yarn leave sts on lh ndl

what am i doing? what i dont understand is what does k2 rows mean? what do i do on the 2nd row? i think if i understand this i will easily get on with the patten but am unsure, help is needed :) thank you xx

OK, you know how to cast on 8 stitches,
First row: Knit across the 8 sts
2nd row: Knit across the 8 sts
3rd row: increase 1 stitch at the beginning, then knit across, giving you 9 stitches
4th row: increase one stitch at the beginning, then knit across. Now there are 10 stitches.
5th and 6th rows: Knit across the 10 stitches
Then break off the yarn leaving a short tail of yarn
I hope this helps.

George The Giraffe Knitting Kit Instructions.?

Posted on December 3rd, 2009 by admin

I bought the George the Giraffe knitting kit at Big W and it came with the two balls of wool and the wool in the plastic bag, but no instructions or pattern can anyone post them or give me a link to where I can find them.

Since there are supposed to be a pattern in the kit, you have a problem. Take it back to the store and exchange it for one that does have the instruction sheet in it. Be sure to have them check the kits to see if others don’t have the pattern either as it looks like someone who put them together was pretty lazy about doing inspections before they were sent out.
The other answer just gives links to learn to knit sites, not how to get the instructions or the pattern themselves that should have been in the kit.

What is the best yarn for making a blanket?

Posted on December 3rd, 2009 by admin

My grandma has cancer and shes in a nursing home right know and i wanted to crochet her a blanket. I wanna use a yarn that isn’t scratchy, soft and will last a long time. Also comes in a lot of different colors. Is lion brand any good?

I would suggest Caron Simply Soft. It’s soft and cuddly, and lightweight. Some worsted weight yarns would end up to heavy for someone in a nursing home. It’s machine wash & dry and will last for years.

What are the best knitting or crochet stitches for unusual yarns?

Posted on December 3rd, 2009 by admin

I bought a bulky (works on size 10.5 American needle) black boucle yarn with a bit of white and a thread of mylar for sparkle. What is the best knitting or crochet stitch to show off the yarn? And I have a 1/2 inch wide multicolor ribbon yarn. How do I show off the yarn/colors? Long stitches seem to be my only choice, so far. Are there others?

In crochet will be the Solomon’s knot (Love knot):
