at the detroit zoo, i decided to observe the red panda, also called the lesser panda or scientific name, ailurus fulgens, for at least an hour because of the way it looks. it’s cute, with red fur and white patches around its eyes, nose, and ears. its long tail is striped brown and black. the red panda is related to the raccoon, as even little kids who viewed it would point out, because of its physical features. it is also related to giant pandas and bears. one person declared the red panda being “the cutest thing ever!”
in addition to being cute, the red panda was very active. in the hour and a half i spent observing the panda, it walked and ran around the display, having me run around with my camera to catch up and find it.
the panda climbed two trees eleven times total. it seemed to favor the tree closer to the gorilla display better than the other. i believe it tried climbing a pine tree at one point, but didn’t get very high up. the panda disappeared into the green needles, and the trees branches shook up to the third row. then the panda re-appeared under the tree, running out. it’s an excellent climber, with catlike claws. the panda would carelessly choose a path to the top, sometimes losing its balance and nearly falling, and hesitating to move once it got to the very top where there were thinner branches.
another behavior of the red panda is marking its territory. it does this by urinating or defecating a little. it squats down, wiggles its behind for a moment, and then runs or walks off.
the panda got a little tired of climbing trees for a while, and rested in the entrance of a rock. it also had a drink of water from a small pond.
outside of the detroit zoo, the pandas are found in the himalayas and mountain areas of burma, china. it is an endangered species, as there are only 5,000 to 6,000 red pandas in the world.
it eats bamboo, and can be found eating the grass in the display of the detroit zoo. it either licks the grass with its tongue, or chews it. it is also known to eat small animals and insects.
from overhearing other people at the zoo, there was supposed to be another panda in the display. it could’ve either been hiding and resting in one of the rock caves, or removed.
the panda’s lifespan is approximately 14 years in captivity, and is mature at one year old.
according to the detroit zoo website, the breeding season for red pandas is january to mid-march. after a gestation of four months, the cubs are born — usually no more than three. they live in a nest made of twigs and branches, and remain in the nest for about three months.
some other interesting facts about red pandas from the wellington website include: “the chinese name for red panda is hunho or firefox, due to their color and similar size to a fox. like giant pandas, red pandas have an extra ‘thumb’ which is simply an enlarged bone. claws are sharp and partly retractable. a red panda can consume up to 45 percent of its own body weight daily eating approximately 200,000 bamboo leaves daily. the origin of the name “panda” is the nepalese word “nigalya ponya”, which has the meaning of “eater of bamboo”. the red panda was first discovered in 1821, 48 years before the giant pandas were found in 1869.”
