Traditional Chinese Bird and Flower Painting. Bamboo Practice.

Posted on August 31st, 2009 by admin

I thought tonight I would venture some ancient techniques for painting Bamboo in my humble way.
I thoroughly enjoy painting with these materials and I wonder what it must have been like 600 years ago, looking at my examples I stidy from.
This was alot of fun. I love the old hand made very thick paper also. It is from Beijing. And has whole pine needles pressed into it also.

Tattooing Last of the KALINGA tattooist Part 1

Posted on August 28th, 2009 by admin

Me and a few of the tribe members of TATAK NG APAT NA ALON TRIBE. along with WHANG-OD the last of the tattooist of the kalinga or in general of northern luzon that practices the old way.. it was really a great honor because we were there at the diddiga festival with LARS who also is a friend of ours and did the show TATTOO HUNTER on discovery channel with WHANG-OD. and so it was a great honor for me for her to ask me to tattoo her when she is the LAST tattooist in the region and the master, like a master passing the blessing onto an apprentice…. so it was so great..

and she took it like a CHAMP!!! and was not moving at all… and the tool i was using was a bamboo and from Benguet by the the ibaloi tribe the bottom part of it is shaped like a SNAKE’s head and the mouth of the snake is where the needles go.. so the HSSS!! of the snake is when you get blessing or tattoo of the warrior symbols of our fallin ancestors.. (of course if any one wanted to know it is not recycled the TOOL it is brand new always and made again and again i replicated the shape so that the symblism can still be powerful when someone is getting tattooed)

my favorite animal

Posted on August 22nd, 2009 by admin

at the detroit zoo, i decided to observe the red panda, also called the lesser panda or scientific name, ailurus fulgens, for at least an hour because of the way it looks. it’s cute, with red fur and white patches around its eyes, nose, and ears. its long tail is striped brown and black. the red panda is related to the raccoon, as even little kids who viewed it would point out, because of its physical features. it is also related to giant pandas and bears. one person declared the red panda being “the cutest thing ever!”
in addition to being cute, the red panda was very active. in the hour and a half i spent observing the panda, it walked and ran around the display, having me run around with my camera to catch up and find it.
the panda climbed two trees eleven times total. it seemed to favor the tree closer to the gorilla display better than the other. i believe it tried climbing a pine tree at one point, but didn’t get very high up. the panda disappeared into the green needles, and the trees branches shook up to the third row. then the panda re-appeared under the tree, running out. it’s an excellent climber, with catlike claws. the panda would carelessly choose a path to the top, sometimes losing its balance and nearly falling, and hesitating to move once it got to the very top where there were thinner branches.
another behavior of the red panda is marking its territory. it does this by urinating or defecating a little. it squats down, wiggles its behind for a moment, and then runs or walks off.
the panda got a little tired of climbing trees for a while, and rested in the entrance of a rock. it also had a drink of water from a small pond.
outside of the detroit zoo, the pandas are found in the himalayas and mountain areas of burma, china. it is an endangered species, as there are only 5,000 to 6,000 red pandas in the world.
it eats bamboo, and can be found eating the grass in the display of the detroit zoo. it either licks the grass with its tongue, or chews it. it is also known to eat small animals and insects.
from overhearing other people at the zoo, there was supposed to be another panda in the display. it could’ve either been hiding and resting in one of the rock caves, or removed.
the panda’s lifespan is approximately 14 years in captivity, and is mature at one year old.
according to the detroit zoo website, the breeding season for red pandas is january to mid-march. after a gestation of four months, the cubs are born — usually no more than three. they live in a nest made of twigs and branches, and remain in the nest for about three months.
some other interesting facts about red pandas from the wellington website include: “the chinese name for red panda is hunho or firefox, due to their color and similar size to a fox. like giant pandas, red pandas have an extra ‘thumb’ which is simply an enlarged bone. claws are sharp and partly retractable. a red panda can consume up to 45 percent of its own body weight daily eating approximately 200,000 bamboo leaves daily. the origin of the name “panda” is the nepalese word “nigalya ponya”, which has the meaning of “eater of bamboo”. the red panda was first discovered in 1821, 48 years before the giant pandas were found in 1869.”

Will substituting bamboo for cotton change the gauge?

Posted on August 21st, 2009 by admin

I am knitting two Mother of the Bride handkerchiefs and fell in love with a bamboo yarn, opting for that instead of the 100% cotton that the directions suggest. I knit up a gauge swatch because I normally never do and these projects are for my Hope Chest and my wedding party scrap book, and I think I found an issue with my lovely yarn. The gauge for the project is 32 stitches and 36 rows = 4" for size 3 needles in Stockinette stitch. My swatch is more like 32 stitches = 5 1/2 inches across. I did only do 16 rows because the swatch is about the size of the finished project! I reduced to size 2 and then size 1 needles, achieving a gauge of 32 stitches = 4 15/16". I’m thinking of reducing my stitches until I make a swatch with the size 3 needles that is only 4" wide. Any advice, and any helpful websites would be very appreciated! Thank you in advance.

It looks like both yarns are of different weight.

If I were you, I’d go for the 16 rows to get the right size. Either that, or go for size 0 (which is less fun usually). The more important part is the crochet edging.
Here are some samples of what other people are doing with the kercief:
