How did hand knitted and crocheted blankets become known as afghans?

Posted on October 28th, 2009 by admin

An Afghan is a blanket, wrap, or shawl of colored wool, knitted or crocheted in geometric shapes.

In terms of etymology, it’s likely that the wraps or shawls that came to be called afghans were originally patterned after textiles from the Afghanistan region. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, afghan "wrap, shawl" dates from 1833.

How can I make my hand knit socks skid-proof?

Does bubble fabric paint do the trick? Or is there a commercial product available? I would like to use hand knit socks as house slippers, but they are ever so slick………

yea, just put some kind of glue or paint in like a small dome, and when it dries, it should be good to go :)

Can’t say i.ve ever made boxer shorts but if you are knitting socks you would have to be really good to not concentrate on them.

I dreamed about holding knitting needles in my hands or feet in order to drive my car. What does this mean?

Posted on October 10th, 2009 by admin

I was driving at dusk. I was either holding one knitting needle between my feet or holding one in each hand. There was no wool though and I wasn’t trying to knit. Weird! Any ideas?

The dream indicates the need to multitask. You feel uncomfortable or ill at ease, if you are not making the most of your time, and try to do a lot of things at once. You can overdo this and get into trouble. Meditate/pray, exercise, and eat healthy, to get stronger spiritually, so that you can better juggle what you need to, but will not lose your sense of vigilance when it comes too over doing things.

Is there a "safe" way to machine-wash hand-knitted garments ?

Posted on September 26th, 2009 by admin

Maybe, like put into a pillowcase, as one does stuffed toys ? And, can they be put in the dryer ?

I do it, but this way. I let the washer fill up with COLD water to the level you need. (If only one item, then the lowest water level setting, of course.) I use only Woolite for delicate knits. I let the machine agitate to dissolve the Woolite. I put the garment in and stand right there and only allow it to agitate on the delicate setting for about 15 seconds, then stop the machine and let the garment soak for about 10 minutes. I then hand turn the dial to drain the washer and only allow it to spin till I know alot of the waster is out. Then fill washer for a rinse, doing the same thing of only allowing it to agitate for a few seconds, shutting off, then soaking in the rinse water a few minutes. Turn dial to drain and then only let it spin for a few minutes on delicate spin. You practically have to be right there turning the knobs to do it. I NEVER dry hand-knitted garments in the dryer. I roll them up in a towel to get more moisture out of them, because, remember, you’re not going to allow them to completely spin all the water out. After rolling in a towel, I then lay it flat on another towel to dry, shaping it once I lay it on the towel. Do not put on a hanger to dry, it’ll stretch and be a mile long. It’s work to hand wash…..and, it’s work to do it my way in the washer, but, at least you’re not doing all the wringing, which I think makes the clothes all twisted and wrinkled. But, again, even on a real low dryer setting, you’d have shrinkage of your hand-knitted garments.

How do you block a baby bib that was knitted by hand?

Posted on September 20th, 2009 by admin

I was on knitting.about.com and was reading about how to block garments. Is there is right or wrong way to block yarns made out of cotton such as Lily Sugar and Cream?

you pin the bib to the size indicated and then steam it. or you can use an iron and put it on the steam cycle and hold the iron about 6 inches from the piece.

While You Were Deployed, Did You Ever Happen To Recieve A Care Package With Hand Knit Socks?

Posted on September 18th, 2009 by admin

I’m just curious because I’ve been knitting military socks and was wondering if anyone’s actually been recieving any from any groups.

Hi. As a Marine Mom, I really appreciate what you are doing for our troops. My son deploys for Afghanistan tomorrow, and I know he and his 2nd. Bat. would welcome anything that would help them feel warm there. I hear it gets cold there in Afghanistan sometimes.
Again, thank you so much.

Anyone know an easy way for left handed mom to teach right-handed 8 yr old knitting?

Posted on September 14th, 2009 by admin

I have been knitting for a long time, but I’m left handed. My 8 yr old daughter wants to learn, but says I’m "too confusing." Because I’ll say "with you left hand,I mean your right…" Any EASY ideas…. (BTW classes are out. She wants ME to teach her..Thanks everyone.

Sit your daughter down in front of a mirror. That way you can sit beside her, have her copy your movements from what she sees in the mirror.
