What are the most practical knits/crochets for babies?

Posted on February 15th, 2010 by admin

What are the most practical knits/crochets for babies? I’ve been hearing a lot about sleep sacks and also carseat blankets. I know most people do baby booties although I have heard they come off and get lost. Any opinions? Thanks!

make crib blankets and sleeping outfits. You can find a lot of things to make for babies on several of the sites and if you are planning on making something email me with what you plan on making and how. Knit or crochet. For a start you can go to http://www.Lionbrand.com or check out http://www.knittingpatternsccentral.com or http://www.crochetpatternscentral.com and go to their directories.

What happens if you put knits in the dryer?

Posted on January 4th, 2010 by admin

I want to wash my scarf, but last time I washed my hand-knitted sweater it became loose and lost its shape… why?

The tumbling of the dryer will cause knitted garments to stretch out of shape. Best to wash with Woolite and dry flat on a towel. Merry Christmas!

What would be a fair price per hour for knitting?

Posted on November 12th, 2009 by admin

For anyone who knits and sells it, what would be a fair price to charge per hour? I have been asked to do an adult sweater with that fuzzy kind of chunky wool and she is buying all the materials.
It’s all handknit, not machine knit.

I’d say $20 per hour.

Can I use knits for a sewing pattern that calls for Wovens?

Posted on October 30th, 2009 by admin

I have a few sewing patterns that I would like to use knit fabrics on. I am concerned about how the fit will be with a knit vs a woven. I have tried to find patterns for knits but cant find anything that I really like for my little girl. Anyone have any suggestions or experience doing this.

You can use knits when the pattern calls for woven, but not visa versa.

You can usually go down one size.

You need to stabilize the shoulder, pocket openings and waist if you are making pants.. You can use twill tape or a strip of the selvage from the fabric you are using.

Use a ball-point needle to help eliminate the possibility of piercing a hole in the knit.

How do you remove(and prevent) balls on knits?

Posted on October 20th, 2009 by admin

A lot of my nice soft knit garments now have little balls on them after a few washes. How do I make these look nice and new again? Is there a way to prevent them from getting all balled up?

To remove them, go to somewhere like Big Lots and purchase a sweater shaver for 5 bucks. You can also find them at some discounters and fabric stores. My friend uses an old used up disposable razor to "shave" them off but you have to be really careful doing that because you can get snags and create holes on some fabrics and knits.

To prevent them, launder them with like weighted items, on the gentlest cycle for the shortest cycle turned inside out. Same goes for the dryer, but I usually only let them toss in the dryer on low heat long enough to loosen the wrinkles and then lay them flat on top of the dryer while drying other loads so the heat dries them the rest of the way. The pills are created by the fibers rubbing up against other garments that are usually of a heavier weight.

What charity can I donate unused fabric to? Wovens, knits, prints, solids…?

Posted on October 6th, 2009 by admin

Please name specific charities. Goodwill and Salvation Army won’t accept. If you have a charity that will accept fabric I will need you to be able to provide a receipt for the donation and be able to pick up. I live in West Hollywood. Thanks :)
Anyone who teaches a sewing class. Schools are tax deductible.

What’s the difference between a knit top and just a regular top?

Posted on September 28th, 2009 by admin

I went to TJmaxx the other day and there was a section called "Knits" but they looked just like any regular plain shirt, so I was just wondering what they actually were.

its just a type of fabric such as cotton knit has a stretch to it
