What is the easiest way to use an adult knitting pattern for a child size?

Posted on November 21st, 2009 by admin

I have a knitting pattern for a hat but it’s for an adult and i want to knit it for a petite 4-year old. Is it best to decrease the overall number of stitches? or the size of the needles i use? Or something else?

Knit a swatch, 1" x 1" using yarn and needle recommended in pattern.
Measure how many stiches per inch.
Measure child’s head.
Cast on number of stitches per inch x measurement of child’s head.
Increase and decrease stitches per pattern.
This formula will work for any size–child or adult.

How to make my knits titer on the knitting loom?

Posted on October 30th, 2009 by admin

For knitting with the knifty knitter (long loom), if I buy a smaller loom (10") will my scarf knits be titer? I don’t like it so loose.

If you use a thicker yarn, the knitting will be tighter. Also, the stitch you use affects the tightness of the knit fabric. The directions tell you to wrap the pegs in a curlicue fashion, going past the peg then wrapping around the peg so the yarn crosses over itself before going to the peg on the other side of the board. Wrap the loom in a zig zag manner instead, following the same order of the pegs. This will give you a tighter stitch, which will also result in a narrower scarf.

Another way to get a tighter knit is to use a loom with smaller diameter pegs, pegs that are closer together, and/or boards that are closer together.

How long does it take to learn the art of knitting?

Posted on October 12th, 2009 by admin

I want to make an eternity scarf for the winter but I do not know how to knit. How long did it take you to get the hang of knitting when you first learned? What level of experience do you need to make a scarf that is attached at both ends?
I don’t have ANY experience in Knitting. Do you have a book or website that you’d suggest for me to learn by?

It all depends on how dedicated you are. It took me about 20 minutes before my mum was able to stop watching me. This little rhyme might help once you get the basics "In through the front door, once ’round the back, Peek through the window, and out pops Jack." I learnt this about a year after I started knitting, and I can tell you it would have helped heaps! Get pretty much any knitting book you can find, they all have the basic how to knit somewhere in there. But the one I would recommend is Stitch ‘n Itch. (Obviosly I had to miss the B in itch, but it’s the title of the book.) Debbie Stoller is the mother of knitting in America, her instructions and patterns are fantastic. I hope this helps, and Good Luck!! :P Oh, and to knit a simple scarf all you need to know is the basic knit stitch. I’d learn that one first, then after you’ve mastered it you can move on to the purl stitch, then try something a bit more complicated and you’re off!

Knitting…?

Posted on October 2nd, 2009 by admin

I’ve been knitting for a couple years and am currently working on a scraf well a few minutes I was working on it and saw a large hole a few roles down can this be fixed? what’s the best thing to do now??

Most likely, you need to rip the rows out down to the hole, then try to pick up the stitch. Just make sure when you put the stitches back on the needles that you don’t twist them. You can find lots of help on http://www.knittinghelp.com/ including some really great videos.

How do I start my Knitting off?

Posted on September 30th, 2009 by admin

OK I have knitted before but I never put the hoops on the needle.
So How do I put the hoopon the knitting needle because its eating away at me. I want to make 66 of them so can someone in DETAIL tell me how to make the hoops. PLease and thank you its urgent.

Make a slip knot. Knit into it & put the stitch back on the left needle. Repeat as needed. When you have enough cast on, knit & take to the right needle. If you can knit, this is the easiest cast on, don’t overthink it.

Is knitting with crochet hook faster then knitting with knitting needles?

Posted on September 28th, 2009 by admin

Is knitting with crochet hook faster then knitting with knitting needles?

I am planning to make a baby blanket. I can use the bamboo needles/circular needles I have . But I wanted to know If I knit a pattern (may be basic one) with crochet hook, is that faster?

Thanks

If you’re using a crochet hook, that’s usually called crocheting, unless you’re knitting with the handle part of two crochet hooks.

If you’re asking if CROCHETING is faster than knitting, the answer is "yes – usually." The blanket will be thicker and will use more yarn, but crocheting is usually quicker. Which technique to use is decided by what final product you want.

There’s a great website for baby patterns in both knit and crochet: www.bevscountrycottage.com

How much is a leather case full of about 100 different sized knitting needles worth?

Posted on September 24th, 2009 by admin

I have a red leather case, dull of about 100 pairs of different sized knitting needles that are all in awesome condition. How much would this be worth?
They’re aluminum

Unfortunately they are not really worth much. You would have to find someone specifically interested in buying, which is very hard to do without investing money to list them. Then there is no guarantee they will sell.

For example on ebay right now there is a set of 102 vintage knitting needles selling for $9.50. Not exactly high finance!

If you know the brands and sizes of each pair you could try listing them separately, but I doubt it is really worth your effort.

Maybe you should donate them to a nursing home or day rehabilitation center nearby.

Any good sites to find free knitting patterns?

Posted on September 22nd, 2009 by admin

I just got back into knitting, and I love a good, interesting pattern. Any suggestions on places to find them.

There are lots and lots. knitty.com has really nice patterns. You might do a web search for vintage patterns. I found some interesting and unique patterns searching for knittied lingerie patterns. Many of the yarn makers have free patterns, check out patons, and berocco for more sophisticated patterns.
some knitting bloggers have their own patterns, and for socks especially, you would be amazed at the variety.
Welcome back!

Where can I find a cat stuffed animal knitting pattern?

Posted on September 18th, 2009 by admin

I want to make a cat plushie. I knit, so it needs to be a knitting pattern.
So far so good :) Love that pattern. Anyone know where to find the "stackable cats" pattern for free? I’m not paying $5 for a downloadable pattern.

heres a link holly
