what are the sewing needles with little balls of color on top called?

Posted on February 3rd, 2010 by admin

this question is pretty self explanatory.

stick pins or quilting pins… same thing, different length.

ETA… dress maker pins DO NOT have balls on top.

Question about sewing needles and health?

Posted on January 27th, 2010 by admin

Ok so I have always wondered if a needle like a sewing needle can cause like HIV or a bad infection like that with just a prick.

Any break in the skin leaves the opportunity for an infection if the area is not kept clean until it heals. However, a simple pin prick from your sewing needle will not cause an HIV infection.

It is highly unlikely that you will ever get HIV from a sewing needle. It is my understanding that the HIV virus which is spread through needles is only in the case of syringe needles which are used for injection, not sewing needles. Besides, I do not believe the virus can survive on a sewing needle like it can while contained in the hollow of a syringe needle.

Sew away without worry of getting HIV.

I once was rushing through a sewing project and not being careful when I stitched right through my index finger. The needle went clear through the nail and through my fingerprint on the opposite side. After removing the thread, I pressed the finger so the blood would clean out the puncture. I placed a band aid on the finger and thanked my lucky stars I did not hit the bone. Although I could not type for a few days, it did not hurt nearly as much as I thought it would. And, no infection.

What is the meaning of DB x 1 in the nomenclature of industrial sewing machine needle?

Posted on January 17th, 2010 by admin

Industrial sewing machine needles are categorized as DB x 1, DC x 27 etc. what is the meaning of DB in that? 1 in that? or DC in that? 27 in that? what type of needle size system is that? Does this have any connection with European or American size system?

That’s a Japanese needle system designation. I do not understand where the name comes from, but can tell you that a DBx1 is a round-shanked industrial needle. Same needle is also known as:
16×231, 16×257, 1738, 287WH, SY2254 and Canu 14:25

I’d suggest you might as Organ needles, as I believe they originated the DBx etc. designators.

Size (a function of needle blade diameter) is not the same as needle system, which specifies the length to the eye, shank type, etc.

Where can I buy sewing machine needles?

Posted on January 10th, 2010 by admin

My aunt gave me an old sewing machine a while back. It still works but the needle broke in half. I tried to replace the needle with another from a sewing machine that doesn’t work but the needle didn’t fit. Where can I find one and make sure it does fit (without buying a million of them)? It’s called a "Sewhandy" and from the Singer brand. It is also very small and looks like it was meant mostly for small jobs.
–Thankyou

If the machine is like this one - http://cgi.ebay.com/3-NEEDLES+MANUALS-Singer-20-Toy-Child-Sewing-Machine_W0QQitemZ400056692263QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090619?IMSfp=TL090619179001r20184

It takes style 24×1 needles and the only ones I found are either on a Chinese website or this site on Ebay - http://cgi.ebay.com/10-NEEDLES-MORE-Singer-20-Toy-Child-Sewing-Machine_W0QQitemZ400057304465QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5d25460591&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1205%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

Maybe someone in the family will help you buy a new machine, for which accessories are easy to find.

Sewing needle foot puncture wound taking a long time to heal. Is it normal?

Posted on December 29th, 2009 by admin

I stepped on a sewing needle on my carpet 2 weeks ago. I went to a doctor recently and got a tetanus shoot and antibiotics. Is it normal for it to take this long to heal. My foot still hurts like hell and I can barely walk. It feels like my foot is broken almost, it hurts that bad at times. Doctor said the tissue will heal and i will be fine. Just want to know if anyone had a similar experience and if it took to this long to heal.

go to an urgent care.

A sewing needle went through my finger nail?

Posted on December 24th, 2009 by admin

I was sewing on my sewing machine, wasn’t paying the closest attention, needle went through my left index finger right through the nail. What should I do to help it heal? Obviously the nail won’t heal, but what can I do to prevent anything from getting worse?

Answers by others are OK, but if you have not had a tetnus booster shot within the last 10 years or are not sure, you should get one immediately. Small puncture wounds are no big deal, but tetnus can kill you.

Piercing my halfway cartilage with a sewing needle?

Posted on November 12th, 2009 by admin

There’s tutorials for people piercing with a safety pin, a sewing needle should be fine too, right?
I got both my cartilage pierced today, and i want one on the halfway.

My aunt won’t take me, so I can’t do anything about it.

Right i cant criticize because i did it myself i just steralized an earing an shoved it in xD i have a boss pain threshold xD
But i warn you i only read after id pierced it that you can get cauliflower ear from piercing it unless its a hollow needle. Thats why they pierce it with a hollow needle in pro places.
But i still took the risk >.<
You could buy a hollow needle off the internet there 100% sterelized (autoclave) and perfect for this situation :).

If you do make sure NO ONE bangs it in the healing time :|
some ******** in my class flicked my ear an it got an infection an i got a lymph noid i had to go to the doctors for antibiotics an my mum obv found out an flipped (shed already let me get my cartilage done but i pierced it again further up an she couldnt understand why i didnt just go to a pro person again)

so yeah now you no the risks go for it if you still wna :)
heres a useful site >.<

Wil it work if i pierce my belly with a sewing needle or safety pin?

Posted on October 26th, 2009 by admin

okay so i have a bely ring but i dont have aneedle …will it work if i use a sewing needle or a safety pin? please dont leave any comments telling me not to do this

Well technically yeah…if you stick a safety pin or a needle through your skin it’s going to leave a hole…it’s just far more prone to infection, improper placement, and a whole mess of other unwanted results. But I suppose if all risk is irrelevant to you and you’d rather pierce it yourself than go to a professional, then yes, a sewing needle will still pierce you. Good luck, please don’t get tetanus.

Can you take a plain old sewing needle in your carry on when flying domestically?

Posted on October 8th, 2009 by admin

I’m going on a trip to California, and I know there are different rules flying domestically than internationally. IE: You can have knitting needles if flying in country, can’t if flying to the UK. Can take certain kind of scissors domestically, not if going to Romania, etc.

I’m quilting a pillow top, and I was wondering if I could take a plain old needle in my carry on, during my trip. All I’ve found on the web is about knitting needles.

Yes, you may. Just put it in your wallet in a little piece of paper. I know it is hard to find, but in the past , I did find where embroidery and sewing needles are ok.
