Needles for vintage Necchi sewing machine?

Posted on October 2nd, 2009 by admin

I have a Necchi "serie Mira" sewing machine that needs a needle.
Where is a good place to buy that part, or is there a modern equivalent available?

Breaking sewing machine needles?

Posted on September 30th, 2009 by admin

I’m sewing on a soft denim pair of jeans on a Singer sewing machine. I’ve gotten the whole thing wound correctly and set correctly but the last two times I tried to sew the machine made a strange growling noise, stopped and the needle broke. It then beeped for a little while then stopped. I tried a second time but the very same thing happened. What am I doing wrong?

I suspect the needle you’re using isn’t the right type. Needles come in different "strengths" for sewing different materials. What works on a thin cotton material won’t work on a pair of jeans. The machine is trying to sew it, the needle is bending and not going down the hole in the throat plate and striking the plate and breaking. You’ll need at least a 14 needle for denim and a 16 would probably be even better. And you want a sharp point, not a ball point. They developed the ball points for sewing on light fabrics and knits without snagging. Since you’ve broken two, it kind of eliminates the needle being bent in the first place.

And the machine is struggling to push the needle through the fabric, that’s why it’s "growling". Make a visit to a fabric store, tell them what you’re sewing and what needle you need. The sales people will help you find it.

Where can I buy sewing needles? san francisco?

Posted on September 28th, 2009 by admin

Or like any kind of needles? (BTW I LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO)

1) Britex Fabrics: Geary between Stockton & Grant

2) Discount Fabrics: all over town, but a few are – Haight & Masonic, Irving & 24th, 11th & Howard.

3) Fabric Outlet: Mission & 17th

Most craft stores will also have small sewing sections.

I wasn’t sure which part of S.F. you live in so I wasn’t sure what would be closest to you. Sometimes the supermarket (Safeway, Cala, etc.) will also have sewing kits in the home section (where they sell hangers and velcro and little home care odds and ends).

can broken sewing needles embedded in your foot cause problems?

Posted on September 24th, 2009 by admin

5 days ago i went to stand up in the lounge room at home when i felt a sharp pain surge through the bottom of my foot near my toes. i looked down and found 1/4 of a sewing needle on the floor and severe pain with the other 3/4 deep in my left foot. i went to the hospital but they wouldn’t touch it as they said it can cause more damage if they remove it. but i was told today the needle wont come out alone and it can rust up and make me very ill…. what should i do???

Sue the hospital that said they would not remove it. Leaving any type of metal in the body (aside from surgical pins etc.) could prove to be very dangerous. This could lead to major infection, and needs to be re-evaluated immediately. Go to a doctor that knows what they are talking about. Most sewing needles are not sterile, and not made from stainless steel. Your friend is right. It can rust up and cause big problems for you.

What does it mean if you find sewing pins stuck in your door frame?

Posted on September 22nd, 2009 by admin

Lately me and my husband have been finding sewing needles stuck to the top right hand corner of a couple of door frames around our house. The funny thing is we don’t even own those kind of needles. Then, yesterday his friend who we never told this too, comes out and says he is finding these pins also in his door frames and can’t explain it. Is this some kind of voodoo stuff or what? Regardless, it kind of has us all in bunches about it. If anyone knows what this means or even has an idea to what it means, please let me know.

Dear Lissy,
Sorry to hear about your situation. sad to hear about it. Well to be truly honest, I have never experienced it before but from what my grandparents taught me about the dark arts and ways to counter it, your situation is based upon an old vodoo spell that is used to cut off all luck from the household and to harm those in it. The sewing needle is always used as an instrument of the dark arts for murder or bringing harm.

Hope I did not scared you or anything. There is a way to counter the curse. go around your house and find all of the needles that had been placed. Round them up in a glass jam bottle. you can either threw it into the sea or bury it (not in your backyard) but somewhere far.The bottle will seal all of the evil in it.

If you have doubts just cleanse the house with Sage.

I do not expect you do do all of this. This is just my advise to you.
May God protect from you from all evil eyes.

What needles are compatible with a singer simple sewing machine?

Posted on September 12th, 2009 by admin

what sizes?

All home sewing machines have used the needle system 130/705H (same as 15x1H or HAx1) in the last 40+ years, so the only thing you need to decide on is size of the needle and point type needed. (Don’t get serger needles with designations like ELx1 or DBx2 — they won’t work in your machine correctly!).

Needle size is determined by the fabric — you want the smallest hole poked in your fabric possible, but if the needle size is too small, you get skipped stitches. FWIW, a size 80/12 needle will sew almost any garment fabric if you only want to get one needle size.

Needle point style is determined by the construction of the fabric: is it woven, is it knit, how closely woven or knit. Schmetz has a light ballpoint needle suitable for most wovens and most knits called a "Universal". Again, if you don’t sew much, and you sew both wovens and knits, a Universal needle will probably do what you need — though other point styles may do a slightly better job.

There are a lot of good needle manufacturers out there — Schmetz is the most commonly found one; others include Groz-Beckert, Lammertz, Klasse, Organ. I’m not sure who’s making Singer’s needles now.

Has anyone ever seen sewing needles in glass tubes? The tubes hold about 5 needles and vacum sealed.?

Posted on September 10th, 2009 by admin

I found these sewing needles and searched EVERYWHERE to find out more about them but come up empty handed. Can anyone offer any insight on these? There looks to be about 5 needles in each tube that looked vacuum sealed. The glass would need to be broken to get the needles out. Other tubes have an eraser colored stopper in one end. Has anyone seen anything like this or know where I can get information on it?
Something like that except older. They are VACUUM SEALED. Some have no stopper and the glass would need to be broken to get the needles out. The ones that have stoppers are not plastic stoppers but an aged orange rubber stopper. I’ve seen the ones you pictured. I have been searching for some time now and have found nothing like what I have.
I don’t think they are suturing needles they came in a sewing kit.

I wonder if someone just reused some old vacutainers as needle holders — in which case, the tubes are no longer under vacuum. Or someone could have shoved some needles through the top,
though why they would do so is beyond me. <g>

Do your tubes resemble:

is there unsafe metal in sewing needles?

Posted on September 8th, 2009 by admin

i pierced my ear using a needle, it is the same size as an earring and even kind of looks like one. would it be safe to just wear that for a few days until i can change it to a regular earring or is there unsafe metal in sewing needles? thanks :)

They make sewing needles out of tin, aluminum, nickel, and sometimes stainless steel. I don’t think that any of those would cause a problem, but you really want to get an earring in there as soon as possible. Earrings are the best for healing a piercing and a needle is kinda long and awkward and can move around alot, hindering healing.
