It becomes gater …
It becomes gater stitch if you either purl every row or knit every row in a piece. To get flat, stockinette stitch you must knit one row and then purl the next. Alternate these two rows. Purl the purl side, knit the knit side.

You have so much patience in teaching! Believe me when I say this that I have never done anything of this sort earlier. My mom would happily finish my home science projects at school for me.
