What happens if you put knits in the dryer?

Posted on January 4th, 2010 by admin

I want to wash my scarf, but last time I washed my hand-knitted sweater it became loose and lost its shape… why?

The tumbling of the dryer will cause knitted garments to stretch out of shape. Best to wash with Woolite and dry flat on a towel. Merry Christmas!

if it is wool or a wool-blend it can shrink in the wash and dryer. They have to be dry cleaned. If its cotton then it can be machine washed. Just lay it flat on a towel to dry. Do not hang dry becuse it can stretch out the knit. Lay it flat and reshape. I usually fold a towel in half and then place my cardigan on top and then wait an hour and place another towel on top and flip it over and remove the damp towel.

    Hope that helps.

They shrink in the dryer, so it’s best just to air dry them, lay them flat somewhere and let them dry naturally.

Knits can shrink and lose their shape when you wash them as well, they can get stretched out of shape but can be okay if washed with cold water on a very gentle setting. Sometimes they will still shrink, so it might be best to wash your scarf by hand with a gentle wool detergent.
