They are …
They are essentially the same thing except that they slant in different directions. So, you would use (generally) an ssk on the right side of your row and a k2tog on the left side of your row so that they will look balanced. Otherwise the knitting will look a little “off kilter” if your decreases all slant in the same direction.

Hey knitwitch… your videos are PRICELESS! Lifesavers. Would you be willing to explain the difference between SSK and K2Tog? I don’t understand the difference between the two. Why use one rather than the other? Aren’t they essentially the same thing???
