Are you talking about the color coding a needle manufacturer like Schmetz puts on its needles to help distinguish point style? See the blue band on the first needle here — that’s a very sharp point Schmetz calls microtex: http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/17206792
Or are you talking about ball-headed pins, which are conventionally done with either plastic or glass heads? See: http://www.threadsmagazine.com/item/3830/a-pin-for-every-purpose
(btw, pins don’t have eyes — a place to insert thread for sewing; needles do. That’s the major difference.)
