What is the best yarn for making a blanket?
Posted on December 3rd, 2009 by admin
My grandma has cancer and shes in a nursing home right know and i wanted to crochet her a blanket. I wanna use a yarn that isn’t scratchy, soft and will last a long time. Also comes in a lot of different colors. Is lion brand any good?
I would suggest Caron Simply Soft. It’s soft and cuddly, and lightweight. Some worsted weight yarns would end up to heavy for someone in a nursing home. It’s machine wash & dry and will last for years.

Different brands have different weights of yarn. I usually use a worsted weight which can be heavy. I make ripple pattern which is airy and soft when finished.
I have included a link for you to look at the different yarns and patterns to see which you prefer but there is nothing like actually touching the yarn to see how it feels. Walmart sells yarn as does Michaels.

I agree with GrandmaK. This type of yarn is very soft. It comes mostly in pastel colors, but there are other brands that have a variety of colors. Lions brand has a yarn called Homespun that is soft.

The weather’s turning chilly in many places right now, so you probably want to get this done as soon as you can. I would recommend Red Heart Light & Lofty. It’s soft, fluffy, and very lightweight. It’s a super bulky (weight group 6) so it works up fast. Being Red Heart, it is machine wash warm, tumble dry medium and never needs blocking. I have a sweater I made from it a few years ago that is still in perfect shape.
EBay has this yarn available for less than the yarn shops do. Check there under the name Light & Lofty and under Bright & Lofty. Both are the same yarn (so is Baby Clouds) but in different color combos. It comes in plains and variegateds, so have fun with it.

Though you want something soft, HOMESPUN can be very difficult to crochet. Lots of people knit afghans and prayer shaws from Homespun, but I don’t know many how successfully crochet with it.
Sensations Rainbow Classics are nice soft yarns and the skeins are quite large. Check your local JoAnn’s.
